I take it all back.
I found some reference on Google to Microsoft Release Notes which commented that Google had fixed the Google Desktop problem that caused IE 7 to crash when opening a new tab.
So, I upgraded Google Desktop and now (cross fingers) IE 7 seems stable, certainly a couple of sites where it constantly crashed now seem to work fine (including this blog)
