Ubuntu xserver update / self censorship?

Hmm

So, last week, before I went to MS Tech.Ed (yes, I know…) I clicked on the ‘update’ glowing icon in my ubuntu interface.

And then I shut the laptop down for a week and buggered off to Tech.Ed 2006.

So, I turn it on last night, and nothing – X-Server crash on start up.

A 20 minute search on the net and I found the command that worked on my laptop for rolling back to a previous version from my local package cache.

But, I’m still annoyed it happened at all – for a non-technical user (or one who didn’t have a second computer) it would have been almost impossible to get my laptop back.

What I find interesting is this – In a brief look online I can’t find any articles about the cock up, nothing on  slashdot – just posts in forums.

Does the Linux community ‘self censor’ any of their more spectacular cockups?  A failure of such spectacular proportions on Windows (even for a very limited number of users) would have been covered in detail and screamed from the rooftops as yet another indication of the imminent death of Microsoft.

Or maybe after a week of love from Microsoft, I’m feeling all warm and fuzzy toward them :)

Anyway, i might write up my notes about tech.ed at some point…
