Bombing content spammers

Well, either one of two things has happened
- The comment spammer has finished this cycle of spamming and gone away
- My .zip file of death has annoyed him enough to give up.
Since i changed my wp-comments file to write back 47MB zip file, I haven’t had a single comment spam attempt.
Don’t worry, you won’t get the file, I’ve made sure thats okay.
Anybody else have a similar experience?

Using a script to send a large file back to a spammer, while a pretty funny idea, might not be such a good thing. I’m not sure how you did it, but wouldn’t there be a problem if the spammer uses a bot (or botnet) that he/she has planted on some innocent server? I’m no expert , so just wondering out loud…

If people won’t take precautions and let their systems be compromised that way, then my ‘bomb’ is likely to be the least of someones troubles.
They might set the computer up to distribute illegal software or movies - they could use it for identity theft - I think my little download idea is unlikely to cause a problem

I like the idea of Richard’s post #9 above, but part of it seems to be missing. Any chance you could add that to v3.2?
BTW, I emailed last week that your web site indicates the latest version is 3.1, but the downloaded code still indicates Version: 3.0. Is that a typo?
Finally, some of my blog admins complain that if they type the wrong answer for Did You Pass Math, their comment is not retained. Occasionally, a comment can be well ‘thought-out’ (read: looooong), and it gets lost if the dypm answer is incorrect. Some browsers preserve the comment if you hit the ‘back’ button, but others do not.
Do you have any ideas about how to retain the comment?
