Lord of the Rings.

I very much enjoyed LoTR:The return of the King, but during its 4th climactic battle scene I couldn’t help but thing one thought:

If the people of middle earth has spent less time following the legend, and more time inventing the machine gun then this whole Sauron thing could have been sorted out in a day or two…

Imagine a screaming wall of orcs running through minefields and being taken out with a liberal application of napalm.

Okay, may be you can’t imagine that, but trust me, it’d be better that putting your faith in 4 emotional midgets and a piece of jewelry

Firstly, I’m not a zealot about anything, except maybe beer :) But I would like to say a few words about Firefox (the alternative web browser to Internet Explorer).

Its my default browser these days, and the default browser for most people at my workplace. there are a few reasons why people prefer it, and these are usually listed with absolute certainty, but I dispute them a little (even though I don’t dispute the choice of firefox!)

  • Its more secure Hmm, maybe at the moment, but when/if it become dominent, I suspect that there will be more than a few holes punched in this theory.

*It’s faster It doesn’t beat IE in loading (yes, I know IE cheats a little here), but its web browsing is pretty nippy I will admit

*Its tabbed browsing rocks Okay, I agree with this one, although they may have pinched that off Opera (www.opera.com). I use alot of website and have many applications open at once, the fact I don’t have a tone of little boxes in my windows taskbar is great.

*Its more reliabe. I disagree, I’ve had a few firefox crashes, nothing that brought the machine down, but it isn’t 100% reliable (but what windows software is).

*Its cross platform Big tick, this is great, my wife uses firefox on her OS X ibook, and I use it on my linux laptop and linux VM, this consistancy is great. (I am proud of my wife, a non techie, who choose to move from safari to firefox all on her own after she has some website compatibility issues with safari)

*Its not microsoft Who cares? I think Microsoft should be respected for what they have achieved, they do some good software and I do believe they innovate. I pick software for its benefit for me, not for some personal vendetta against a successful company (Companies like that pay my salary, why would I hate them?)

*Its cool. Um, yeah, keep telling yourself that. If you get laid by telling someone you use FireFox, please let me know so I can alert the media.

Anway, enough philosophising, I have steak to cook! (this is being written next to the BBQ, mark one up for wireless lans)
