Google releases another ‘beta’

One has to wonder, did google really peak with search?

The quality of their recent apps (chat etc) has been poor, and hidding behind the ‘beta’ tag is frankly starting to look a little stupid.

I suspect they are going through all the troubles you get when your software delivery team has to scale to many more [...]

Eight Versions of Vista, but do I care?

I read the latest news from MS about Vista with bewilderment.

I understand why they’ve done it, it gives you the chance to reach down and up and provides the pricing segmentation and so forth.  But it must be fraught with danger.

How does a simple user move from one version to another, will a market evolve [...]

The last full measure…

Abraham Lincoln ‘Gettysburg Address’, one of the greatest speeches ever written:

Four score and seven years ago our fathers brought forth on this continent, a new nation, conceived in Liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created [...]

Jakob Nielson doesn’t eat his own dogfood

I must say, I’ve found Jakob’s books very good in the past, but I was unhappy to find his purchasing process for his reports to be an example of violating his own principles.

And the response from their support, ‘It’s not our fault’ (see below)

For whom the (PDF) tolls…

ARG!

There should be a circle of hell devoted entirely to former employees of Adobe and their Acrobat development team.

No, it [...]

Bombing content spammers

Well, either one of two things has happened

The comment spammer has finished this cycle of spamming and gone away
My .zip file of death has annoyed him enough to give up.

Since i changed my wp-comments file to write back 47MB zip file, I haven’t had a single comment [...]

Fun with comment spammers..

Ah… the sheer joy of it all.

Whilst my anti-spam measures have been working just fine, I decided i’d take it to the next level.

So I moved my real wp-comments-post.php to a new location (updating my wp theme to match) and replaced the real file with a honey pot version.

At first it just logged the spammers [...]

IE 7 Beta 2 review

A quick review (just the facts ma’am)

You can see whats new with a visual tour at microsoft.com before/after which you can download it

First impressions:

It’s 11MB in size
It wants to ‘validate’ your copy of windows to check it isn’t pirated.
It wants to download and [...]

My thoughts on Wordpress comments anti-spam…

Well, yesterday i decided to try my hand at some very simple code to restrict spamming, a spur of the moment thing. It’s now the following day and I keep thinking about the whole problem and the approaches taken by various people/projects.

I’m left thinking - us techies are making it all too hard! I feel [...]
