Well - I’ve turned over a new leaf, a little bit anyway.

Thanks to my friendly local unix administrator who sorted out some of the more obscure features of my installation I’m now successfully enjoying the internet with Ubuntu 6.06.

The ‘bad/hard’ bits

  • Wireless networking, it took Greg (local, friendly unix admin) at least 20 minutes to get it working using a wrapped Windows version of my wireless driver.
  • Slow mouse (fixed with some changes to xorg.conf)
  • Wireless is still a bit dodgy - it ‘goes away’ and needs disabling/re-enabling
  • Some strangeness with abrupt shutdowns (possibly heat related, seems to have gone away after some updates were applied)

The ‘good’ bits

  • Ubunu (and Debians) package installation system is seemless.
  • Its fast!
  • Evolution is nice
  • Java apps are quick and work well

Anyway, as I learn more, I’ll post my thoughts, but its been fairly enjoyable so far!
